Just Starting Out: Untraditional Fundraiser
My first-ever photo story "Untraditional Fundraiser" chronicled the Art Club's breast cancer fundraiser project. I captured some interesting angles and motion, but struggled with completely focusing, proper shutter speed and framing. The photo essay was posted March 2, 2017.
DUI Demonstration
A few months after publishing "Untraditional Fundraiser", I photographed Sandpoint High's annual Mock DUI Demonstration. Though many of my photos were overexposed, my photography was much better. With a little bit of photoshop editing, I toned back the brightness and contrast on the photos to produce an adequate photo recap of the event. The photo essay was posted on May 24, 2017.
On-Call Photography for the Sandpoint Reader
During summer 2017, when I worked as a writer for a popular local alternative-weekly paper The Sandpoint Reader, I photographed for nearly all of my own stories. Some of my favorite shots for the Reader, featured below, capture the essence of my articles visually.
Right are two shots I captured while on assignment at the Sandpoint airport. My story detailed a visit from noted aviatrix Jacquie Warda and her interaction with the local youth aerospace club. The article emphasized women in aviation and Warda's significance as a role model. These photos visually express the position of the article, which can be found in full here. |
Left are some photos I snapped at a community meeting spotlighting three youth climate activists from Seattle I reported on. Left is Mayor Shelby Rognstad snapping a photo of the activists planting a tree after their presentation on Plant for the Planet, an international environmental organization dedicated to offsetting carbon emissions by planting trees. Right, brothers Adonis Williams and Aji Piper sing one of their original songs about climate change — a staple of their impact as activists. Article posted here. |
Self-Teaching Sports Photography
As my year as Editor-in-Cheif started, I talked a lot to the staff about breaking out of our comfort zones to produce new media. To walk the walk, I taught myself sports photography by photographing nearly every sporting event for the first month of school. I didn't know what I was doing. Producing photo essays took forever due to the sheer amount of bad photos I had to sift through. With some tips from my adviser and Photo Editor and lots and lots of practice, I eventually grew confident in covering athletic events.
